Commissioning
What is Commissioning?
Commissioning is a structured process used on construction projects to make sure that all systems and equipment - like pumps, cables, ventilation systems, etc. - are installed properly and actually work the way they’re meant to. It’s a step-by-step process that helps catch problems early, track what’s been tested, and hand over a site that works as expected.
At its core, commissioning is about planning, testing, fixing, and signing off.
What’s Commissioning in RIB CX?
In RIB CX, Commissioning is built as a new module that helps teams manage this process digitally, from start to finish. You can:
Set up your commissioning structure — e.g. by system, area, or stage.
Import assets — like equipment or parts that need to be tested.
Define which tests apply to each asset using a Test Matrix.
Generate test forms (called ITRs) — for each asset and phase (like Pre-Commissioning, Commissioning).
Track progress as work gets completed on-site.
Capture issues and defects directly from the field, using mobile devices.
Everything happens inside the familiar RIB CX platform, so teams can collaborate, view reports, and track progress without needing extra tools or spreadsheets.
Who is this for?
This module is designed for:
Commissioning Managers who need to plan, assign, and track tests across large volumes of assets
Site Engineers who are responsible for completing tests and checklists
QA and Compliance Teams who need a clear audit trail of what’s been tested, when, and by whom
Project Managers who need visibility into progress, issues, and readiness for handover
Whether you're working on a tunnel, a plant, or a hospital, this helps keep all your commissioning work in one place.
What problems does it solve?
Most teams today manage commissioning in Excel. That works early on — but becomes painful as the project grows.
Common pain points:
Test forms live in separate files or folders
It’s hard to track what’s done and what’s missing
Linking issues, RFIs, and checklists is manual and error-prone
Handover is rushed, with poor visibility and inconsistent records
The CX Commissioning module brings all of this into one structured system — so teams stay on top of what’s been tested, what still needs doing, and where the issues are.
Key Concepts We’ve Introduced
To make commissioning work smoothly in RIB CX, we’ve introduced three core building blocks:
1. Structure
Think of this as the container for your project’s commissioning setup — like a folder that holds everything. You might create a Structure per project or per major phase (like “Tunnel Fitout” or “Stage 1 Handover”).
2. View
This is how you look at your data — you can create different Views to see assets and test reports grouped by system, location, phase, or any other field. Views let you monitor progress and manage forms.
3. Test Matrix
This is where you set the rules: which test templates apply to which assets and when. Once set up, RIB CX automatically knows what tests to generate — saving time and reducing errors.
What’s in This First Release (MVP)?
This MVP includes:
Commissioning Structures – Organise your assets by system, location, or project phase
Asset Import – Bring in asset data from Excel
Test Matrix – Map assets to ITR templates and phases
ITR Form Generation – Create forms in bulk (or manually) for each asset
Checklist Completion – Fill out checklists, add attachments, and log comments
Issue Creation – Log punch list items or defects from within the test form
Views – Create reports and dashboards to track progress by any field
Mobile Support – Complete and review forms on mobile, even offline
It’s a starting point - deliberately kept focused - so we can gather real feedback and make sure it works well for your teams and projects.
